Thing #4
I looked through the following blog entries:
#1 – Duck with a Blog
#2 – Teaching Brevity
#3 – CoolCatTeacher
#5 – The Ripe Environment
My favorite entries were the ones written by or with small children. I am not very old but young students now get to experience things through technology that I never dreamed of as a child. How fun to have a class blog as a 2nd or 3rd grader! Or to have your favorite author respond to your questions via the internet! I also liked the candidness of their blogs. The young students expressed themselves on their academic levels. I think it was wise of these teachers to emphasize the importance of the experience rather than focusing on proper spelling or grammar. I also found it entertaining that most of the duck blog responses listed “relationships” (boyfriend, babies, etc.) as an explanation for why the duck left. Too cute!

I agree with you. I’m glad the teacher’s allowed the student to simply write their response uninhibited by grammar. I distinctly remember my 4th grade teacher allowing us to do this type of writing in our class journal. It was soooooo hard for me to do because I was so afraid of making a mistake and I had been programmed to concentrate on form. I am not saying that we should do away with correct grammar, just allow them some freedom to express themselves.
